If this page baffles you, don't give up. Either send me an email, or seek me out at a meeting.
I can accept good old-fashioned paper submissions (but keep your graphics simple!).
How?
By Paper.
Keep the layout simple, and bear in mind that the appearance of a Web page cannot be controlled,
only the structure and content.
Floppy Disk.
Copy your submission to a floppy disk, and hand it to me at the next meeting. Please read the
File Types section for guidance on file types that I can use.
By Email
Send your submission, as an attachment, to
mark@roscrow.uklinux.net. Please read the File Types section for guidance on file
types that I can use.
Things To Bear In Mind
I do not have any Micro$oft or Macintosh programs available to me at home. My computers
are set up for technical computing, web site creation, and image manipulation, non of which
requires (or can be done cheaply) with MS based software. Please see the File Types section.
Web page design controls the structure and content, but not the appearance,
of web pages. Different browsers (or the same browser on different computers) will display a
given page differently.
Screen resolutions range from 640 by 480 to 1025 by 768 and above. I have designed the site
for viewing on screens of 800 x 600 and above. Images to be embedded in a page should fit into a
200 x 200 pixel square (i.e. landscape, max 200 pixels wide, portrait, max 200 pixels high), although
I can reduce images to the required dimensions.
File Types
Try to avoid mixing text and images in the same file.
*.TXT, Straight text files.
These are the best for submitting text to be included in a page.
Text that you want in bold should be prepended with <B>
and post-pended by </B> (eg this will be <B>bold</B>).
Text that you want in italics should be prepended with <I>
and post-pended by </I> (eg this will be <I>italic</I>).
Heading text can be indicated by prepending with <H1>, or <H2>, upto <H5>,
and post-pending by </H1>, or </H2>, upto </H5>
(eg this will be <H3>heading level 3</H3>).
*.CSV, comma delimited text files (eg, from MS Excel)
These files are best if you want to submit tabular information. Just Save As... CSV.
*.DOC, MS Word files.
Micro$oft Word files may be acceptable, depending on their complexity. Keep to a maximum of two
pages and don't use any fancy fonts or formatting. Fonts in a web page are generally controlled
by the browser, not the web page Author. Formatting is far more restrictive in web pages.
*.XLS, MS Excel files.
Micro$oft Excel files may be acceptable, depending on their complexity. Don't use more than one
worksheet, and don't use any fancy fonts or formatting. If I can read the file I will convert it
to .CSV, so any fancy formating you have done may be lost.
You can try saving the file As HTML...
*.HTM / *.HTML, Hypertext Markup Language files.
HTML format files can be submitted, but they will be edited to ensure a consistent look to the
site, so don't worry about the background, etc. The site has been designed for viewing on
monitors with a resolution of 800 by 600 minimum, the maximum page width at this resolution
is 630 pixels. The site is aimed to be read by the maximum number of browsers, so I have not
used Style Sheets, etc. Files created using WYSIWYG editors (like MS Frontpage) may be acceptable,
but will depend on the complexity of the file that they produce.
*.JPG / *.JPEG
These are standard image files used on the Internet. For images that are embedded in pages, the image
should fit into a 200 pixel by 200 pixel box. Images for the gallery will be reduced so that the
longest side will be 640 pixels in length (i.e. landscapes will be 640 pixels wide, portraits will be
640 pixels high). The thumbnails in the gallery page fit into a 150 pixel by 150 pixel box.
*.GIF
These are standard graphics files used on the Internet. The same guidelines as *.JPG files apply.
*.PNG
This is a new type of graphics file that is becoming more common the Internet. The same
guidelines as *.JPG files apply.
Other image file types (*.bmp, *.psd, etc)
These files are produced by scanners, paint programs, photo editing programs, etc. The majority don't use
compression, so tend to be very large. Although I can convert many of these files, there may be problems
getting them to me. Please contact me if you have any queries.
Other file types (*.pub, *.wks, etc)
These files are produced by programs such as MS Publisher, Lotus Smart suite, etc. I am unable to
read or convert these types of files. Note that a carefully designed and formated document is unlikely
to be displayed properly on the Internet. Please contact me if you have any queries.
